Arcoxia indication

Arcoxia is prescribed for the treatment of acute gouty arthritis, osteoarthritis and other conditions as determined by your doctor.

How to take Arcoxia

When taking the tablets, swallow them with a glass of water. Do not halve the tablet.
Take your Arcoxia at about the same time each day.
Taking Arcoxia at the same time each day will have the best effect. It will also help you remember when to take the dose.
It does not matter if you take Arcoxia before or after food.

For osteoarthritis, the recommended dose is 60 mg once a day.
For rheumatoid arthritis the recommended dose is 90 mg once a day.
For ankylosing spondylitis the recommended dose is 90 mg once a day.
For the relief of gout attacks the recommended dose is 120 mg once a day, which should only be prescribed for the acute painful period.
For the relief of chronic musculoskeletal pain the recommended dose is 60 mg once a day.
Doses greater than those recommended for each condition have either not demonstrated additional efficacy or have not been studied. Therefore, the daily doses stated above for each condition should not be exceeded.
If you have mild liver disease, you should not take more than 60 mg a day. If you have moderate liver disease, you should not take more than 60 mg every other day.

The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with Arcoxia:
- Anxiety;
- Blurred vision;
- Chest pain;
- Cold or flu-like symptoms;
- Constipation;
- Difficulty in breathing (dyspnoea);
- Difficulty in sleeping (insomnia);
- Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhea;
- Dizziness;
- Excessive fluid retention in the body tissues;
- Fatigue;
- Headache;
- Heart failure;
- High blood pressure (hypertension);
- Liver or kidney disorders;
- Muscle cramps;
- Nausea;
- Nosebleeds (epistaxis);
- Rash;
- Resulting in swelling;
- Ulceration or bleeding of the stomach or intestine;
- Vomiting or abdominal pain;
- Weakness or loss of strength (asthenia);
- Weight gain;

Arcoxia precaution


Arcoxia can sometimes cause liver problems. Consult your doctor promptly if you develop unexplained itching, yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, nausea and vomiting, abdominal pains, loss of appetite or flu-like symptoms.
Stop taking Arcoxia and consult your doctor if you develop any of the following symptoms while taking Arcoxia: skin rash, skin blistering or peeling, sores inside your mouth, other signs of an allergic reaction, or signs of bleeding in the stomach or intestine, such as passing a black or blood-stained bowel movement or vomiting blood.
Arcoxia may hide fever, which is a sign of infection. This may make you think mistakenly that an infection is getting better when it isn't, or that an infection is less serious than it is. For this reason you should tell your doctor if you get an infection while you are taking Arcoxia.
People with impaired kidney, liver or heart function should have their kidney function monitored while taking Arcoxia. Your blood pressure should be regularly monitored while you are taking Arcoxia.
Arcoxia may cause fatigue and dizziness. You should take care when performing potentially hazardous activities, such as driving or operating machinery, until you know how Arcoxia affects you and are sure you can perform such activities safely.
The use of Arcoxia is not recommended if you have active peptic ulcer, Bleeding from the stomach or intestines, Inflammatory bowel disease such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease, Uncontrolled high blood pressure (hypertension), Moderate to severe heart failure, Heart disease caused by inadequate blood flow to the heart (ischaemic heart disease), e.g. angina or history of heart attack, Disease of the blood vessels in and around the brain (cerebrovascular disease), e.g. history of stroke, Moderate to severely decreased kidney function, severely decreased liver function, pregnancy, breastfeeding, people who have developed asthma, nasal inflammation (rhinitis), nasal polyps, swelling of the face, lips and tongue (angioedema) or itchy rash (urticaria) following the use of aspirin or other NSAIDs, rare hereditary problems of galactose intolerance, the Lapp lactase deficiency or glucose-galactose malsorption.
Arcoxia should not be prescribed if you are allergic to one or any of its ingredients. Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have previously experienced such an allergy. If you feel you have experienced an allergic reaction, stop using Arcoxia and inform your doctor or pharmacist immediately.

Arcoxia drug interactions

Drug interactions can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Arcoxia. Inform your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking.

Arcoxia missed dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the Missed Dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Arcoxia storage

Store Arcoxia in a cool dry place where the temperature stays below 30°C. Keep away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in bathroom. Keep Arcoxia out of the reach of children.
