No Prescription:
Omeprazole is prescribed for the short-term treatment (4 to 8 weeks) of the following:
* Stomach ulcer
* Duodenal ulcer (near the exit from the stomach)
* Erosive esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus)
* Heartburn and other symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (also known as GERD, which occurs when stomach acid backs up into the tube connecting the throat to the stomach).
It is also used to maintain healing of erosive esophagitis and for the long-term treatment of conditions in which too much stomach acid is secreted, including Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, multiple endocrine adenomas (benign tumors), and systemic mastocytosis (cancerous cells).
Combined with the antibiotic clarithromycin (Biaxin) (and sometimes with the antibiotic amoxicillin as well), Omeprazole is also used to cure patients whose ulcers are caused by infection with the germ H. pylori.
Omeprazole is used for treating acid-induced inflammation and ulcers of the stomach and duodenum, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. It also is used in combination with antibiotics for eradicating H. pylori infection of the stomach.
In addition, Omeprazole is available as an over-the-counter (OTC) product. However, Omeprazole OTC is approved only for frequent heartburn (occurs two or more days a week). The prescription version is still needed for treatment of ulcers, esophagitis, GERD, and other conditions that require monitoring by a doctor.
Without Prescription:
Omeprazole is in a class drugs the pump named proton inhibitors (PPI) which block manufacture of an acid by a stomach. Another drugs in the same class includes Prevacid, Aciphex, Protonix, and Nexium. Proton inhibitors of the pump are used for treatment of conditions such as ulcers, illness of outflow gastroesophageal (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison the Syndrome which all are caused by an acid of a stomach. Omeprazole, similarly to other inhibitors of the proton pump, blocks enzyme within the precincts of a stomach which makes an acid. Blocking enzyme, manufacture of an acid is reduced, and it allows stomach and esophagus to heal. Omeprazole OTC has been approved for sale without the prescription.
This prescription is used to consider the ignition compelled by an acid and ulcers of a stomach and a duodenal gut, illness of outflow gastroesophageal (GERD) and Zollinger-Ellison the Syndrome. It also is used in a combination with antibiotics to destroy H. pylori infection of a stomach.
