Tenormin prescription

Tenormin is prescribed to treat high blood pressure. It also is prescribed to prevent angina (chest pain) and heart attacks. Occasionally doctors prescribe Tenormin for treatment of alcohol withdrawal, prevention of migraine headache, and bouts of anxiety. When prescribed for high blood pressure it is effective alone or combined with other high blood pressure medications, particularly with a thiazide-type water pill (diuretic).

How to take Tenormin

Take Tenormin with a full glass of water. Tenormin can be taken with or without food. Take it exactly as prescribed, even if your symptoms have disappeared. Try not to miss any doses, especially if you are taking Tenormin once a day. Take Tenormin at the same time every day. Do not crush, break, or chew the tablets. Swallow them whole. Do not stop taking Tenormin abruptly unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. Stopping Tenormin abruptly may cause your condition to become worse.

Tenormin side effects

If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking Tenormin and call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment:
- Wheezing or shortness of breath;
- Swelling of your lips tongue or face;
- Swelling of your feet and/or lower legs;
- Sudden weight gain (more than 2 pounds in one day or 5 pounds in one week);
- Skin rash;
- Leg pain or cramping;
- Hives;
- Difficulty breathing;
- Cold or blue feet and hands;
- Closing of your throat;
- Chest (heart) pain;
- An unusually slow or irregular heart beat;
- An allergic reaction;

If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking Tenormin and talk to your doctor:
- Constipation;
- Depression;
- Diarrhea;
- Fatigue or confusion;
- Gas nausea or vomiting;
- Headache or dizziness;
- Impotence (difficulty obtaining or maintaining an erection);
- Nightmares;
- Weak pulse or mildly slow heart rate;

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Symptoms of Tenormin overdose may include:
- Wheezing;
- Weakness;
- Vomiting;
- Sluggishness;
- Slow heartbeat;
- Shortness of breath;
- Nausea;
- Low blood sugar;
- Low blood pressure;
- Fainting;
- Dizziness;
- Constricted airways;
- Congestive heart failure;
- Confusion;

If you suspect an overdose of Tenormin, seek medical attention immediately.

Tenormin precaution

If you have heart failure, inadequate blood supply to the circulatory system (cardiogenic shock), heart block (conduction disorder), or a severely slow heartbeat, you should not take Tenormin. You'll also need to avoid it if it gives you an allergic reaction. If you have high blood pressure, you must take Tenormin regularly for it to be effective. Since blood pressure declines gradually, it may be several weeks before you get the full benefit of Tenormin; and you must continue taking it even if you are feeling well. Tenormin does not cure high blood pressure; it merely keeps it under control. Do not stop taking Tenormin abruptly unless you are directed to do so by your doctor. Stopping Tenormin abruptly may cause your condition to become worse. Call your doctor immediately if you experience shortness of breath. Use caution when driving, operating machinery, or performing other hazardous activities. Tenormin may cause dizziness or drowsiness. If you experience dizziness or drowsiness, avoid these activities. Tell your doctor and dentist that you are taking Tenormin before having surgery. Use alcohol cautiously. Alcohol may increase drowsiness and dizziness while taking Tenormin. Before taking Tenormin, tell your doctor if you have asthma; heart problems such as low blood pressure, a slow heart rate, heart block, sick sinus syndrome, a pacemaker, heart failure, or any other heart problems; diabetes, depression, thyroid disease, kidney disease, liver disease, or any type of circulatory disease. You may not be able to take Tenormin, or you may require a dosage adjustment or special monitoring during treatment if you have any of the conditions listed above. Tenormin is known to have harmful effects on a developing baby. Low birth weight and other effects have occurred. Do not take Tenormin without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant or could become pregnant during treatment. Tenormin passes into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Slow heart rates in breast-fed babies have occurred. Do not take Tenormin without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.

Tenormin drug interactions

Before taking Tenormin, tell your doctor if you are using: allergy treatments (or if you are undergoing allergy skin-testing); guanabenz (Wytensin); an MAO inhibitor such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), tranylcypromine (Parnate), phenelzine (Nardil), or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam); taking a heart medication such as nifedipine (Procardia, Adalat), reserpine (Serpasil), verapamil (Calan, Verelan, Isoptin), diltiazem (Cardizem, Dilacor XR), clonidine (Catapres), digoxin (Lanoxin), doxazosin (Cardura), guanadrel (Hylorel), prazosin (Minipress), or terazosin (Hytrin); a diabetes medication such as insulin, glyburide (Micronase, Glynase, Diabeta), glipizide (Glucotrol), chlorpropamide (Diabinese), or metformin (Glucophage); a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, others), naproxen (Aleve, Anaprox, Naprosyn, others), ketoprofen (Orudis, Orudis KT, Oruvail), and others; a respiratory medication such as albuterol (Ventolin, Proventil, Volmax, others), bitolterol (Tornalate), metaproterenol (Alupent, Metaprel), pirbuterol (Maxair), terbutaline (Brethaire, Brethine, Bricanyl), or theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theochron, Theolair, others); the stomach medication cimetidine (Tagamet, Tagamet HB); or prescription or over-the-counter cough medicines, cold medicines, or diet pills. If you are using any of these drugs, you may not be able to take Tenormin, or you may need dosage adjustments or special tests during treatment. There may be other drugs not listed that can affect Tenormin. Tell your doctor about all the prescription and over-the-counter medications you use. This includes vitamins, minerals, herbal products, and drugs prescribed by other doctors. Do not start using a new medication without telling your doctor.

Tenormin missed dose

Never take 2 doses of Tenormin at the same time. If you miss a dose of Tenormin, take it as soon as you remember. If it's within 8 hours of your next scheduled dose, skip the one you missed and go back to your regular dosage schedule.

Tenormin storage

Store at room temperature between 68 and 77 degrees F (between 20 and 25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medicines away from children and pets.
