Trimox: An antibiotic of the penicillin type that is effective against different bacteria such as Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria gonorrhea, Escherichia coli, Pneumococci, Streptococci, and certain strains of Staphylococci, particularly infections of the middle ear, tonsillitis, throat infections, laryngitis, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Trimox is also prescribed in treating urinary tract infections, skin infections, and gonorrhea.

How to take Trimox

Take Trimox by mouth with or without food, usually every 8 or 12 hours, or as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Antibiotics work best when the amount of medicine in your body is kept at a constant level. Therefore, take Trimox at evenly spaced intervals. Continue to take Trimox until the full-prescribed amount is finished even if symptoms disappear after a few days. Stopping the medication too early may allow bacteria to continue to grow, which may result in a relapse of the infection. Inform your doctor if your condition persists or worsens.

Trimox side effects

May occur:
- Diarrhea;
- Nausea;
- Vomiting;

If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor or pharmacist promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur:
- Yellowing eyes or skin;
- Stomach/abdominal pain;
- Persistent sore throat;
- Persistent nausea or vomiting;
- Fever;
- Easy bruising or bleeding;
- Dark urine;

Trimox may rarely cause a severe intestinal condition (pseudomembranous colitis) due to a resistant bacteria. This condition may occur weeks after treatment has stopped. Do not use anti-diarrhea products or narcotic pain medications if you have the following symptoms because these products may make them worse. Tell your doctor immediately if you develop:
- Abdominal or stomach pain/cramping;
- Blood/mucus in your stool;
- Persistent diarrhea;

Use of Trimox for prolonged or repeated periods may result in oral thrush or a new vaginal yeast infection (oral or vaginal fungal infection). Contact your doctor if you notice white patches in your mouth, a change in vaginal discharge or other new symptoms. A serious allergic reaction to Trimox is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of a serious allergic reaction include:
- Dizziness;
- Itching;
- Rash;
- Swelling;
- Trouble breathing;

Trimox precaution

Before taking Trimox, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics; or if you have any other allergies. Trimox drug interactions

Before using Trimox, tell your doctor or pharmacist of all prescription and nonprescription/herbal products you may use, especially of: Allopurinol, live vaccines, methotrexate, probenecid. Trimox may decrease the effectiveness of combination-type birth control pills. This can result in pregnancy. You may need to use an additional form of reliable birth control while using Trimox. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Trimox may cause false positive results with certain diabetic urine testing products (cupric sulfate-type). Trimox may also affect the results of certain lab tests. Make sure laboratory personnel and your doctors know you use Trimox. Do not start or stop any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.

Trimox missed dose

If you miss a dose, take as soon as remembered; do not take if it is almost time for the next dose, instead, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not "double-up" the dose to catch up.

Trimox storage

Store at room temperature between 59 and 86 degrees F (between 15 and 30 degrees C) away from moisture and sunlight. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep away from children and pets.
